Kenai is a town on the Kenai Peninsula of 7,452 people located at the mouth of the Kenai river about two and a half hours driving south from Anchorage. It is the largest city on the Peninsula with a total area of 36 square miles. The main sources of income are oil/gas and commercial fishing.
Kenai Tourism
Tourism is a very large part of the community because of the Kenai River. Some of the worlds largest salmon are caught right out of the waters that surround the town. The only municipal airports that have flights to and from Anchorage is in Kenai, so for many people this is the first stop on their adventure of the Kenai Peninsula.

Kenai History
The name Kenai is derived from the Dena’ina Indian word kena which means “flat, meadow open area with few trees.” Kenai is one of the oldest towns on the Kenai peninsula dating back to the 1700’s when it was used as a Russian trading post. The commercial fishing boom started Kenai with the opening of several canneries in the 1920s.
